affaired that bookstores simply do not dedicate enough shelf space and promotional animation to African American children's works Vanesse Lloyd-Sgambati, of The Literary, a public relations firm focused onward literary ventures, founded the Fair, now in its 12th year. "We draw our throngs by offering a wonderful selection with great titles at affordable prices. We also have author readings and signings as well as promotional giveaways."
Lloyd-Sgambati is also the creator of the African American Children's part Project, a nonprofit organization that encourages children to lay open good reading habits and sustains African American children's books. Her interchange of opinion to parents: "You're going to corrupt your child a toy or a video game? Make assured that you also buy a volume to preserve the legacy of African American writers."
Asked what changes she has seen in black interest children's works in her dozen years, Lloyd-Sgambati responded: "Book are now more issue oriented, similar as Bebe Moore Campbell's latest offering." (See BIBR CHILDREN BOOKSHELF, September-October 2003)
"There are still many works on slavery, but people are also starting to recognize the importance of volumes about normal family life. works on hair are still a big; parents repeatedly buy them for their younger children," she adds. "I perceive that in the past twelve years, fortunes of the quality imprints like Hyperion, Scholastic, leeward and Low and Just Us main division s are doing great stuff. They stay the course and that makes me want to stay the course."
And stay the course she will, especially if her nearest big project gets the virid light. Lloyd-Sgambati wants to create a children's volume museum with a rich archive to insure that useful books would never go on the outside of print and that our best African American authors will be remembered for generations to come
